Selling or disposing of a vehicle
If you’re selling or disposing of your car, you must return your license plate to the South Carolina DMV within 30 days of the sale. Your options for returning your plate include returning it in person at a SCDMV brand or by mailing it in. In addition, you’ll have to complete a Notice of Vehicle Sold form and cancel the liability insurance on the vehicle sold.

If you’re moving out of South Carolina to a new state, you’ll have to return your SC license plate after registering your vehicle in the new state. You can return your plate at a SCDMV brand or by mailing it into the SCDMV.

Purchasing a new license plate
After purchasing your new plate, your old plate becomes invalid. You can decommission your plate online or fill out SCDMV Form 452 and mail it in with your invalid plate.
