We’ve all been there: checking your bank account before ordering an iced vanilla latte and everything bagel at Starbucks to ensure the funds are ready to be spent. You’ve meant to put some money in savings for a rainy day, but bills and coffee cravings have put the need in the back of your mind.

But now, with the question of “Do I have enough for Starbucks?” on your mind, it’s time to get serious.

Don’t freak out! You can still get your daily coffee fix! Small changes to your daily routine or quick alterations around the house can add up quickly when it comes to saving money.

Check out our tips and tricks for saving money around the house and outside of it, and why building savings should be at the top of your to-do list!

Why Should I Focus on Saving Money?

We are always told to save money or keep some tucked away for a rainy day…but why? Saving is an important habit to get into, for both financial security and accomplishing life goals.

Here are the top three reasons to save money:

Providing a safety net during financial setbacks

Building an emergency fund is among the most common motivators for saving money. The purpose of an emergency fund is to financially prepare for the unexpected, whether that be sudden unemployment, medical emergencies, or home repairs.

Meeting life goals or dreams, such as upgrading a home or vehicle

Unfortunately, accomplishing our future goals and dreams can often come with a heavy price tag. Pursuing higher education, buying a brand-new vehicle, or going on that big vacation will require serious funds. The sooner you start setting aside money to accomplish your dreams, the faster you’ll be able to achieve them!

Offering flexibility in your employment, such as taking a sabbatical to focus on physical and mental health

When it comes to your career, things don’t always go as planned. Getting your dream job may mean taking a pay cut, you might want to start your own business, and burnout is always a possibility.

Whatever happens, having a financial cushion can help make the journey a little less stressful.

Do Space Heaters Save Money? Do I Need to Rinse Dishes First?  Top 10 Ways to Save Around the House!

When it comes to saving money, you don’t have to start with putting large amounts into a savings account. In fact, small changes around the home can start to add up! We’ve compiled ten tips on how to save money in 2024, so keep reading to find out!

  1. Switch to LED lightbulbs
LED lights use at least 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than traditional lightbulbs, saving you money by buying fewer light bulbs over time and reducing your energy bills!

But don’t forget to clean them every now and then–a dirty lightbulb emits 30% less light than a clean one. By dusting off the bulb and fixture, you may be able to reduce the number of lights on in each room without noticing a difference!
  2. Wash Clothes in Cold Water
Switching from hot water to a cold water cycle can have more benefits than you may realize. On top of reducing the risk of one misplaced red sock turning your clothes pink, switching from hot to warm water cuts every load’s energy in half! This means making the switch from hot to cold water will result in even more savings!
  3. Say Goodbye to Dryer Sheets
Next time you take on the laundry aisle in the grocery store, pass by the dryer sheets in exchange for wool dryer balls! Wool dryer balls can cost about $11 for a pack of four, which can last up to 1,000 loads EACH! Your dryer sheets cost about $10 for roughly 240 loads, making dryer balls more cost-effective.
  4. Skip the Rinse
Growing up, you may have been told that you have to rinse your dishes of stubborn food before it goes into the dishwasher. But did you know that two minutes of rinsing dishes consumes five gallons of water?

Thanks to modern tech, most dishwashers are equipped to remove the toughest food debris without rinsing. Now you can save both time and money on your dishes, and leave the tough messes to your dishwasher.
  5. Install Low-Flow Fixtures (And Cut Back Your Shower Time)!
Low-flow fixtures are designed to use less water than standard models. This can help the average household save about 2,700 gallons of water every year and decrease water consumption in the home by almost 50 percent!

In addition to installing low-flow fixtures, cutting back a few minutes on your shower time is a great way to save water. Even cutting one minute of your time in the shower could save about 75 gallons of water a month!
  6. Use Your Fans Year Round–The Right Way!
While it may seem counterproductive to use fans in the winter, it can actually help your bill! Ceiling fans not only reduce summer cooling costs but also help reduce winter heating bills. For a cooling effect, flip the switch to make the blades rotate counterclockwise, or during the winter, making the blades move clockwise will help distribute the heat.
  7. Cover the Windows
Depending on where you live, it can be challenging to keep your home cool during the summer while keeping costs low. One great way to do this–without your electric bill exploding–is to cover your windows! According to energy.gov, about 30 percent of a home’s heating or cooling is lost through your windows. So find some fun sunlight-blocking curtains or blinds to add to your home aesthetic while also saving you money!
  8. Swap Your Streaming Services
We all remember the moment that Netflix cracked down on the location of your account streaming, forcing many to say goodbye to their sister’s friend’s account and open their own. Adding a Netflix subscription to your already existing Hulu, Max and other streaming services can be costly, especially when we often stick to one (maybe two) platforms per month.

Instead of paying for all accounts, try rotating platforms every couple of months! This will help you tuck a little away in savings while still being able to start your membership at the touch of a button.
  9. Unplug the Energy Vampires
Have you heard of the energy vampires? They refer to the electronics that draw on power even when not in use–they just have to be plugged in. Hair straighteners, device chargers, and gaming consoles are some of the most common energy vampires.
  10. Do Household Chores During Off-Peak Hours
You may have experienced lower rates when traveling during the off-season–the same low rates can apply to your power bills! When you use your appliances during off-peak hours, power companies will often charge lower rates when the demand is lower.

Try doing your laundry at night or running the dishwasher in the early morning and see what happens to your electric bill!

Small Changes–Big Savings!

When it comes to building savings, we often feel discouraged if we can’t transfer large amounts or save as much as we think we should.

Making small transfers or changing little things around the house can help decrease your bills while putting a little more money in your pocket! Good things take time, including savings!
